TurboGrafx-16 Emulator enables users to have fun in the TurboGrafx-16, a home console designed in 1987 by NEC and Hudson Soft for Japan and in 1989 by NEC for North America. It is one of those momentous consoles, as it marked the first home console that used 16-bit technology—even though it had an 8-bit CPU and a 16-bit graphics chip. The console had lots of arcade games and some really special gaming experiences.

The rivals for TurboGrafx-16 were Super Nintendo and Sega Genesis, which already got major fame, and this was the reason that it didn’t do well in North America, but it was great in Japan at that time. In fact, playing its games couldn’t be much easier today with modern emulators like Mednafen and RetroArch.

It is also extremely accurate, emulating hundreds of systems beyond the TurboGrafx-16, and has HuCard and CD-ROM game compatibility. RetroArch is pretty much the same experience, but with shaders as well as even higher resolutions along with the save states. Both emulators may make the games appear more like the originals while still being improved versions.

There’s also a tonne of great classic games on TurboGrafx-16, all of which say how pretty darn good it looks for arcade-style gaming. Of the best, certainly, is Bonk’s Adventure, an excellent platformer that pits a prehistoric caveman using his big head to bang on enemies. That is certainly one of the most beloved titles on this system and acted as an unofficial mascot for the TurboGrafox-16. But on the flip side, R-Type is a side-scrolling shooter that accommodates fabulous graphics with stiff gameplay for fans of shoot-’em-up style.

Besides these legendary games, TurboGrafx-16 still held a great many other hidden gems that remain good to this day. Ys Book I & II is an excellent action RPG that people praise much for fast combat and an intriguing story. Splatterhouse is a horror beat-’em-up and one of the first few games to really have bloody and serious tones instead of light-hearted and family-friendly; otherwise, what games could show in the time? Blazing Lazers, a great shooter, demonstrates really quickly and smoothly how powerful the graphics of the system are.
