Mega Man ROM is the first game of the same name that was launched in 1987, forming the basis of yet another successful franchise on Capcom’s side. The plot is based on a robot named Mega Man, who was initially designed by Dr. Light as the helper in his laboratory. However, one of his collega, Dr. Wily converts six industrial robots to become dangerous robots and attacks the world, Mega Man offers to be turned into a combat robot to stop the six renegade robots.
Armed with his trusty Mega Buster, Mega Man sets out to defeat Dr. Wily and his robot masters: The first six listed range from Cut Man, Guts Man, Ice Man, Bomb Man, Fire Man to Elec Man. Each boss is in its own stage and has its own background environment in levels that are filled with foes and any obstacles one can imagine.
What made Mega Man unique from platformers of that era was that it lacked stage-to-stage linearity. This time however the different stages that the robot masters set for the players were not rigid in structure and the players had the freedom to decide on which stages to start with and which ones to do next. While defeating all bosses results to a new weapon with powers borrowed from that particular boss, the game is both strategic because some weapons can easily demolish certain henchmen or bosses but not the others.
This rock-paper-scissors mechanism was adopted in the series and made the game more interesting and played many times. As one of the hardest games to be released during the NES era, Mega Man is fondly looked upon because of its stiff controls, creativity on the part of the game designers and composers, and the music.
