Castlevania II: Simon’s Quest ROM – NES Game

Released in 1988 for the NES, Castlevania II: Simon’s Quest is the direct sequel to the first Castlevania and is a significant step away from the traditional action platformer style of gameplay. Picking up seven years after the events of the first game, it continues the series with Simon Belmont, who is cursed by the dying Count Dracula. Simon is given a specific set of physical objects: a rib, heart, eye, nail, and a ring that belonged to Dracula, whose ashes must be reunited and burnt at the remains of the castle to save the land of Transylvania and avoid Dracula’s resurrection.

Castlevania II: Simon’s Quest ROM - NES Game

Unlike the progressive stages of the earlier game, Simon’s Quest is open-world, non-linear, with RPG components including towns. Simon can talk to the villagers, buy items, and receive hints. The game has a day/night cycle with enemies getting tougher and shops getting closed in the night at towns.

Simon can level up, as related to the exposure of hidden items throughout the level and the solving of puzzles, making exploration crucial to progress. While this fusion of action-adventure and RPG elements was quite unorthodox during the release of the game, it also played a part in making the Castlevania II mediocre at best because of its hard-hitting and ambiguous puzzles and hints.

Emulator

To experience Castlevania II: Playing Simon’s Quest on modern devices will require an NES emulator. Some of the best and most used emulators are Nestopia, FCEUX, and Mesen since they reproduce the games very close to the original NES one. These emulators come with options like save states, graphics, and controls whereby the act of playing the game becomes easier despite the fact that it is rather difficult and confusing.

Features

  • Day/Night Cycle: Ironically enough, the day and night cycle really affect this game’s playability. In the days, enemies are relatively weak, and the townsfolk provide valu- able information. During the nights, stronger enemies and shops closed, giving this game an exciting challenge.

  • RPG Elements: Character can defeat enemies to level up, and also collect hearts used as in-game currency to purchase items and upgrades like new whips, weapons, etc. The game asks players to collect clues and solve different puzzles to advance.

  • Multi-endings: It has three ending, and this will mostly depend on how fast Simon defeats Dracula as well as removes the evil curse. This is replay value to any one seeking the best ending.

  • Open-World Exploration: In comparison to Super Mario RPG, Castlevania II: Simon’s Quest is a nonlinear game where players can visit different towns, forests, mansions, and caves to find Dracula’s bones.
